Happy Canada Day to all of my fellow proud Canadians, and to everyone around the world who wish they were Canadian. This is the greatest country on Earth, and we should all be proud of what we have built together though the past two centuries through sacrifice and a strong sense of community!

My Grandmother...

Posted by on Sunday, January 18, 2015, In : Events
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the death of my grandmother. I never got the chance to know her - I wouldn't be born for more than a decade yet - but everyone I know who knew her spoke well of her. I wish I had gotten the chance to meet her and get to know her.

Happy Canada Day to all who are proud to be Canadian, and all those who wish they were Canadian. This truly is the greatest country to live in, and we should all be proud of the society we have built together though the past two centuries or so.

Burns Day!

Posted by on Sunday, January 26, 2014, In : Events
Happy Burns Day to all of my friends and family in Scotland and abroad!

This year's celebration is especially meaningful to me as this is the first Burns Day that I have been aware of two lines of Scottish ancestry. I always knew my paternal grandmother's family was from Fife, Scotland, and had traced their family line back to the 1600s, but last summer I also learned that my maternal grandfather was part Scottish.

The Frazer family emigrated from an unknown part of Ireland in the mid-nineteent...

Rememberance Day

Posted by on Monday, November 11, 2013, In : Events

As Remembrance day arrives again, and people around the world (or at least the Commonwealth) take time to remember the sacrifices of so many young men and women in too many wars, peacekeeping missions, and 'police actions', it is also a good time for individuals to look back on their own family members and extended family members who served. Whether they were killed, injured, or simply gave years of their lives for the common good, it is worth remembering what they did for all of us.

For my...

Happy Halloween!!

Posted by on Thursday, October 31, 2013, In : Events
Happy Halloween Everyone!!

Remember to be cautious when driving tonight, as there will be many excited children flying on a sugar buzz and not always paying attention to their own safety. We want to keep the night fun for families, and devoid of accidents and injuries.

So go out, have fun, and most of all be safe.

Happy St Patrick's Day!!

Posted by on Sunday, March 17, 2013, In : Events

Happy St Patrick's Day to everyone who is Irish, descended from the Irish, or just wishes they could be Irish. I am lucky enough to be part Irish, and although I have always been proud of my ancestry this year it is especially meaningful. The reason is that just a few days ago I happened to meet a cousin of mine (specifically a third cousin in my maternal grandfather's family) and through an exchange of family history, I now have traced my Irish ancestors back over a thousand years!

Happy Robbie Burn's Day!!

Posted by on Saturday, January 26, 2013, In : Events
To all of my Scottish friends and family (and those who only wish they were Scottish) may you have a happy Robbie Burn's Day!

Personally, I will be breaking out the haggis and neeps for dinner, and piping them in much to the dismay of everyone within earshot.

And as a shameless link, since this is my family history blog, here is a link to my Scottish genealogy.

Remembrance Day

Posted by on Sunday, November 11, 2012, In : Events
Once again, I want to take the time to honour all of the men and women who have protected this country and served in it is various times of need. Those in Canada will know that today is Remembrance Day, when we celebrate the end of the Great War (aka WWI) and honour all who have come through the hardships of military service.

This year it is especially meaningful for me, as I was able to view the military service records for both of my grandfather's in the past year.  I never really got to kno...

Anniversaries

Posted by on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, In : Events

Once again, this is an entry that is of very little interest to anyone except me, but it is my blog so I will write it anyway ;)

I was just thinking of how many anniversaries all fall into this month, just through random chance. So I thought I would take a moment and commemorate all of them at once...

  • April 4: The 100th anniversary of my great grandparents anniversary. David Thomson had come to Victoria,BC from Scotland and was working as a postal sorter, and Lizzie Moyes had come here from S...

Remembrance Day

Those in Canada will know that today is Remembrance Day, when we celebrate the end of the Great War (aka WWI) and honour all who have come through the hardships of military service.

Last year I wrote about some of the specific individuals in my own family and what they went through, and I still honour everything they accomplished even if others may think it triv...
