Happy Halloween!!

October 31, 2013
Happy Halloween Everyone!!

Remember to be cautious when driving tonight, as there will be many excited children flying on a sugar buzz and not always paying attention to their own safety. We want to keep the night fun for families, and devoid of accidents and injuries.

So go out, have fun, and most of all be safe.

Coming to Canada

July 1, 2013
Canada Day! A day to celebrate the great nation of Canada, and all of the immigrants and first nations people who have made it one of the best places in the world. There are as many tales of this country as their are people, and every immigrant who came here had their own reasons and their own story. Here are a few from my own ancestors,

Robert Bird was a letter carrier and furniture maker in Nottingham, England. He had a wife, Catherine (Scrimshaw), four adult sons (Arthur, George, Henry, and...

Happy St Patrick's Day!!

March 17, 2013

Happy St Patrick's Day to everyone who is Irish, descended from the Irish, or just wishes they could be Irish. I am lucky enough to be part Irish, and although I have always been proud of my ancestry this year it is especially meaningful. The reason is that just a few days ago I happened to meet a cousin of mine (specifically a third cousin in my maternal grandfather's family) and through an exchange of family history, I now have traced my Irish ancestors back over a thousand years!

Obviousl...

Happy Robbie Burn's Day!!

January 26, 2013
To all of my Scottish friends and family (and those who only wish they were Scottish) may you have a happy Robbie Burn's Day!

Personally, I will be breaking out the haggis and neeps for dinner, and piping them in much to the dismay of everyone within earshot.

And as a shameless link, since this is my family history blog, here is a link to my Scottish genealogy.

Remembrance Day

November 11, 2012
Once again, I want to take the time to honour all of the men and women who have protected this country and served in it is various times of need. Those in Canada will know that today is Remembrance Day, when we celebrate the end of the Great War (aka WWI) and honour all who have come through the hardships of military service.

This year it is especially meaningful for me, as I was able to view the military service records for both of my grandfather's in the past year.  I never really got to kno...

Military Records

May 4, 2012
I thought I would take the opportunity to inform fellow genealogists and amateur military historians that the government has a program right now in which you can have them send photocopies to you of military records for deceased veterans. (For veterans dead less than twenty years you must provide proof that they have died and that you are related though). It is done at no charge through the Canadian archives, and it is really interesting reading.

I am mentioning this today because I finally re...

Anniversaries

April 10, 2012

Once again, this is an entry that is of very little interest to anyone except me, but it is my blog so I will write it anyway ;)

I was just thinking of how many anniversaries all fall into this month, just through random chance. So I thought I would take a moment and commemorate all of them at once...

  • April 4: The 100th anniversary of my great grandparents anniversary. David Thomson had come to Victoria,BC from Scotland and was working as a postal sorter, and Lizzie Moyes had come here from S...

Restored Photo

January 30, 2012
For any who are interested in the Faithfull family history, I have finished a rough restoration of an old photo I was given a few years ago of William Faithfull and his children.

The man sitting on the far left is my great-great-grandfather, William Faithfull, and the woman standing behind him and slightly right is my great-grandmother, Hettie (Faithfull) Frazer. This photo was taken sometime in the late 1890s, and represent William's children by two marriages (I believe that the woman on the...
