I thought I would take the opportunity to inform fellow genealogists and amateur military historians that the government has a program right now in which you can have them send photocopies to you of military records for deceased veterans. (For veterans dead less than twenty years you must provide proof that they have died and that you are related though). It is done at no charge through the Canadian archives, and it is really interesting reading.

I am mentioning this today because I finally received the records for my paternal grandfather who served in WWII in the Royal Canadian Navy, stationed in Halifax and Quebec. (I had already received my maternal grandfather's records a few months ago, with details of his WWII service in the Royal Canadian Air Force as part of the coastal patrols).

So I would encourage everyone with veterans in their family history to get the records before the government cancels the program. (As always, I am also quite willing to send scans of the records I have to anyone who is related and interested in the records that I obtained).
